Gomel oblast lies to the southeast of Belarus and borders on Briansk oblast /Russia/, Kiev , Chernigov and Zhitomir oblasts /Ukraine/.

The territory of Gomel oblast is 40,400 square kilometers. One third of the territory is covered with forests; the biggest rivers the Dnepr, the Sozh, the Berezina and the Pripiat are the most important navigable ways of Belarus .

There is the national park Pripiatskiy and the Polesye radiation-ecological reserve in the oblast.

Today there are 23 museums and 4 theaters and philharmonic societies in Gomel oblast numbers.

The region has 2,540 monuments, 1,360 of them are monuments of history and culture, 140 of architecture and 1,040 of archeology. And if the latter /they include ancient settlements and burial places/ are of interest only to archeologists and historians, the other places stir deep interest of the people who appreciate architectural masterpieces and are fond of the Belarusian history.

The Creation exhibitions to open in Gomel

GOMEL, 13 June (BelTA) A series of exhibitions titled The Creation will open at the Lenin regional library in Gomel on 13 June. The exhibitions are timed to the 25th anniversary of the Gomel State Art College, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee.

Even when the exhibitions were still in the making, specialists called them some of Gomel's biggest exhibitions of this kind. The expositions will occupy several hundred square meters.

The expositions will feature graduation works of the Gomel State Art College students, designs of souvenir products and purses, exhibitions of dolls, craftwork, and posters. An exhibition of traditional costumes from various regions of Belarus will be arranged in the hall of the reading room.

Nearly 800 students majoring in art have been trained by the Gomel State Art College since it was established. Most of its graduates work at higher educational institutions of Belarus. Many students have been granted scholarships of various funds, including the special fund of the Belarusian President to support talented youth.
