Gomel oblast lies to the southeast of Belarus and borders on Briansk oblast /Russia/, Kiev , Chernigov and Zhitomir oblasts /Ukraine/.

The territory of Gomel oblast is 40,400 square kilometers. One third of the territory is covered with forests; the biggest rivers – the Dnepr, the Sozh, the Berezina and the Pripiat – are the most important navigable ways of Belarus .

There is the national park Pripiatskiy and the Polesye radiation-ecological reserve in the oblast.

Today there are 23 museums and 4 theaters and philharmonic societies in Gomel oblast numbers.

The region has 2,540 monuments, 1,360 of them are monuments of history and culture, 140 – of architecture and 1,040 – of archeology. And if the latter /they include ancient settlements and burial places/ are of interest only to archeologists and historians, the other places stir deep interest of the people who appreciate architectural masterpieces and are fond of the Belarusian history.

Belarus’ Days of Culture in Russia on 19-22 June

The Days of Culture of the Republic of Belarus will be held in Russia from 19 to 22 June, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Culture Ministry.

The program includes the Vitaut ballet production by the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater, and a photo exhibition of the BelTA News Agency. The Days of Culture will contribute to the development of cultural interaction between the two countries, and will help strengthen contacts and relations between Belarus and Russia.

Russian-Belarusian cooperation in culture has been vibrant. Popular festivals, forums, contests are held annually. The largest of them are the International Festival of Arts Slavonic Bazaar in Vitebsk which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Among the brightest joint projects include the Yuri Bashmet International Festival and Vladimir Spivakov Invites.

Among the joint projects was the reconstruction of the South-Eastern Barracks of the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial and a new exhibition the War Museum – Territory of Peace. The Belarusian and Russian culture ministries are working on the Union State draft program “Perpetuation of the memory of the Fatherland defenders and victims of wars”. This program provides for the allocation of funds for major repairs of the Fifth Fort and South Barracks of the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial and the completion of the works on the memorial commemorating the First World War in Smorgon, Grodno Oblast.

National Film Studio Belarusfilm and the TV and Radio Broadcasting Organization of the Union State have made a historical movie “Brest Fortress” which was screened in Belarus and Russia. Belarusian and Russian filmmakers are planning to work on a new joint TV show about USSR Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Gromyko.
