Gomel oblast lies to the southeast of Belarus and borders on Briansk oblast /Russia/, Kiev , Chernigov and Zhitomir oblasts /Ukraine/.

The territory of Gomel oblast is 40,400 square kilometers. One third of the territory is covered with forests; the biggest rivers the Dnepr, the Sozh, the Berezina and the Pripiat are the most important navigable ways of Belarus .

There is the national park Pripiatskiy and the Polesye radiation-ecological reserve in the oblast.

Today there are 23 museums and 4 theaters and philharmonic societies in Gomel oblast numbers.

The region has 2,540 monuments, 1,360 of them are monuments of history and culture, 140 of architecture and 1,040 of archeology. And if the latter /they include ancient settlements and burial places/ are of interest only to archeologists and historians, the other places stir deep interest of the people who appreciate architectural masterpieces and are fond of the Belarusian history.

Gomel to host Sozhski Karagod choreography festival 13-15 September

GOMEL, 2 July (BelTA) Gomel is gearing up to the 7th international choreography festival Sozhski Karagod, which is to take place in the oblast capital on 13-15 September, BelTA learnt from head of the cultural department of the Gomel City Hall Yekaterina Degtyareva.

A competition has been announced for the best decoration of the city central streets, and the main concert venues. The competition has been also announced for the best design project on the emblems of the festival, souvenirs, printed and promotion materials.

According to Yekaterina Degtyareva, the program of the festival will be adopted soon. Partaking in the forum are traditionally about 1,000 artists and guests from Belarus, CIS and non-CIS countries. Among them are amateur bands of different choreographic styles.

The festival is aimed at preserving, developing and promoting choreography, studying modern processes in global dancing art, expanding and strengthening international creative ties, enhancing cooperation of national cultures, developing choreographic festival movement in Belarus.

The forum is sponsored by the Belarusian Culture Ministry, Gomel City Hall and the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee.
